Why do USPS stamps have a slash through the postage?

I noticed that stamps now have a slash through the postage rate. I read that this was done so that stamps could not be reproduced illegally. But, couldn't someone just reproduce the stamps anyway? I guess I don't understand how a slash can prevent forgery of stamps.
