Is it better to pay more for a car with less miles on it?

I am trying to decide which is better or more advantageous: spending more $ on a decent car/SUV with less miles on it? or spending less $ on a vehicle with higher miles on it? I really am looking to buy a Nissan, Honda, etc... Any suggestions or advice??
