In my research I am told that the Alkaline earth metals and the Alkali metals are similar. How?

They both form cations (lose electrons). They are both highly reactive. All elements in both groups have a silverish color. All elements in both groups are soft. Both groups react with water to form strong alkaline hydroxides.
